Facts, activities and pictures on The Great War (1914-1918)

by Helen Watts

The centenary of World War I (from 2014 to 2018) is a time when people all over the world will be remembering an event which saw millions of lives lost in a war which re-defined the map of Europe. Special events will be held throughout the four year anniversary and across the UK, accompanied no doubt by comprehensive media coverage. So this is the perfect opportunity to introduce the topic to young children and to use a powerful, historical event as a context for work right across the curriculum.

However, the challenge for primary schools is to find a way to help young children understand and identify with a series of events that took place a 100 years ago. That's why Helen Wats has written the WWI Primary Teaching Resource -  a brand new set of downloadable resources to be published by LCP this autumn.

The resource provides age-appropriate materials to support lessons not just in history, but also in English, Maths, Science, Geography, Art and design, Design Technology, Music and PE. Arranged into three separate components - Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2, these lively, appealing resources can be used as part of a special project for the 2014-2018 centenary or at any time during the school year.

For each age group, the resources include:

Visual resources
Activity ideas
Activity sheets
and a Glossary

Each unit is also accompanied by a teacher's Planning chart, showing how the activities provided link to the Programmes of Study in the NEW primary curriculum.
