The Ghost of the Trenches

Author talks & Creative writing workshops

What part did storytelling play in the First World War? Why did this turbulent time in our history give rise to so many folktales and legends? And what is the difference between a myth and a legend? Why not find out by inviting Helen Watts to visit your school or library for a talk or workshop inspired by her collection The Ghost of the Trenches and other stories from the First World War, co-written with storyteller, Taffy Thomas MBE (A&C Black, Bloomsbury, iSBN 9781472907875).

Sessions can be tailored to meet individual needs, but are generally suitable for audiences age 8 and up. They include a brief overview of the book's historical context, an exploration of some of the typical features of a myth or a legend, an author reading and plenty of time to ask questions about the book or about being an author. Creative writing workshops will offer participants the chance to create their own legends, or try their hand at retelling a traditional tale that they already know. All sessions include an opportunity to buy books and have them signed by the author.

Session length can vary depending on the age of the audience and the size of the group, but typical author talks last from 1 hour to 90 minutes, including time for Q&A and book signing. Workshops usually run for a minimum of 2 hours.
